Questions about Acupuncture

Is Acupuncture Painful?

Acupuncture is for the most part very painless. The needles are fine and the techniques used come from many years of training to eliminate discomfort.

Does Acupuncture work for weight loss? How?

Acupuncture is very helpful for weight loss. There are a number of studies showing that the same physiological mechanisms involved in acupuncture’s ability to reduce pain signaling, also have an effect on modulating reward centers in the brain. This is one of the reasons why acupuncture is so helpful for overcoming addiction. The proven ability for acupuncture to calm stress and anxiety is another important benefit. There is also preliminary research showing that acupuncture is able to reduce insulin resistance, while simultaneously improving the way the body metabolizes fats.

Acupuncture can take the edge off the food cravings, make one feel less stressed through the process, and help improve blood sugar and boost the metabolism. Nevertheless, what I will say to any patient that comes to me with a weight loss goal is that they can’t expect acupuncture to do the work for them. Losing weight in a sustainable way and achieving long-lasting results is going to require a multi-faceted approach, dedication, patience and hard work.

How many treatments does it take to see an improvement?

Acupuncture works through a series of treatments, but most patients will notice some improvements in the way they feel after only one treatment. Acupuncture is able to reprogram the body toward a state of harmony. Much like changing a bad habit, the body needs to receive repetitive signaling for a period of time before the new patterning sticks for good. The treatment timeline varies depending on the age of the patient and severity of the condition. A patient who is older and has had a severe chronic condition for many years will require more treatments over a longer period of time than a younger patient with a newer, more mild condition.

How often do I need to get acupuncture and for how long?

Most patients come to me with issues they’ve had for many years and I recommend that they commit to getting acupuncture two times per week for the first 2 weeks followed by weekly treatments for the next 6 weeks. A 2 month course of treatment is usually enough to see significant progress. Once the condition has resolved, the frequency of treatments is reduced to every other week and then to once a month, and then to coming in for a “tune-up” every few months. Of course, there’s nothing harmful about getting weekly treatments for the rest of your life. I have patients who love the way they feel coming in every week, but I genuinely want my patients to achieve lasting results. My goals is for my patients to feel self empowered and be able to go on with their healthy and happy lives without being dependent on my care.

Does acupuncture help with everything?

The great thing about acupuncture is that it can make patients feel better no matter what they are suffering from. Acupuncture engages the body’s own innate healing response to make it helpful for a wide variety of ailments.

How does acupuncture relieve pain?

Acupuncture is able to activate the body’s production of endorphins and reprogram neurological pain signaling. Acupuncture is on the front lines of fighting the current opioid epidemic. As a demonstration of how effective acupuncture is for reducing pain, it is used to this day for surgical analgesia, not only in China, but all over the world.

Is acupuncture good for muscles and joints?

By modulating the stretch receptors in the connective tissue, acupuncture is able to reprogram the way the nervous system holds muscle tension. Because of this, acupuncture is great for a stiff neck, shoulder, or low back. Its great for carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, and tension headaches. It can also draw microcirculation into the joints, cartilage, and ligaments to help heal old injuries and prevent arthritis from ever forming.

Does acupuncture help with stress and anxiety? How about sleep?

Acupuncture works so well for stress, anxiety and sleep that many of my patients are astonished by the results. In China there is an expression that roughly translates as, “When you don’t feel like yourself, you get acupuncture.” There’s an abundance of research showing the ability for acupuncture to engage the parasympathetic “rest and digest” part of the nervous system. Acupuncture also has the proven ability to tune down overactive parts of the brain. Countless aspects of your life get better when you are feeling less stressed and sleeping more soundly.

I’m having trouble getting pregnant, can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture is very effective in helping couples conceive and hold their pregnancy. Acupuncture is a highly successful treatment in restoring fertility in men and women. It improves ovarian and uterine function in addition to sperm count and quality. Acupuncture is able to help balance hormones via modulation of the entire endocrine system. The reduction of stress and anxiety also plays a major role in improving fertility and helping guide couples through what can often be a challenging time.
